The following list presents some of the applications and online utilities that we have found useful and use on a regular basis. For your convenience, we have divided these resources into two sections: online resources (web based utilities that you can access from your web browser) and desktop applications (software applications that you can download and run from your computer).

Online Resources
W3C Markup Validation Service
The W3C Markup Validation Service is a free service that checks Web documents in formats like HTML and xHTML for conformance to W3C Recommendations and other standards.
W3C CSS Validation Service
The W3C CSS Validation Service is a free service created by the W3C to help web designers and web developers check Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).
Colour Contrast Check Tool
The Colour Contrast Check Tool allows you to specify a foreground and a background colour and determine if they provide enough of a contrast "when viewed by someone having colour deficits or when viewed on a black and white screen" [W3C].

Desktop Applications
Screen Ruler by Micro Fox Software
Screen Ruler is a great virtual ruler ready to be dragged around on your computer screen. This application is very useful to measure objects in Pixels, Inches, Decimal Inches, Picas, Centimetres, Percentage of Length and in Multiple Custom Settings of your own design. It features a horizontal and/or vertical orientation, a dynamic mouse tracking measurement, adjustable length, a square tool, a magnifying Screen Loupe, plus it can float above all other windows. It measures diagonals, displays angles and square areas.
Sizer by Brian Apps
Sizer is a freeware utility that allows you to resize any window to an exact, predefined size. This is extremely useful when designing web pages, as it allows you to see how the page will look when viewed at a smaller size.
